Different Apps and Their Use:
1. ASK.FM : A social networking service based around users asking questions. Users may ask questions anonymously which has led to problems with cyberbullying and offensive content. There are currently 80 million users.
2. TWITTER : A micro blogging social network which allows users to send and receive texts ( tweets ). Twitter is public by default and tweets are searchable unless they are protected by the user. There are currently 500 million users.
3. OPENDOOR APP : This App is rapidly becoming popular in schools. It can be freely downloaded. It allows users to browse anonymously and will bypass any network level filtering.
4. INSTAGRAM : Allows users to share photos with each other. All photos on Instagram are public by default which means that anyone who is using Instagram or visiting the website will be able to access them. There are currently 80 million users.
5. TUMBLR : A micro blogging and social network which allows users to post images, audio, video and comments and text to a webpage/blog. Users can follow others and profiles can be public or private. This is quickly catching up with Facebook. All sharing is public by default, content is published so that anyone can view it. There are currently 150 million users.
6. WHATSAPP : An instant messaging app for smartphones that allows users to exchange free text messages with other WhatsApp users, locally and worldwide. You can send images, videos and audio media messages as well as your location using integrated mapping features. By default, this App allows any WhatsApp user to view your last seen, profile photo and status.
7. SNAPCHAT : A popular app that can share images and photos. It is sharing that lives in the moment, but can be saved. It should disappear after a limited amount of time. It can be screen-shot and then be repurposed. ** There are also SnapSave and SnapHack that will take the screen-shot no matter what the timer was set to. **
8. TINDER : An app used for hooking-up and dating. You can rate profiles and find potential hook-ups via GPS location tracking. The issue is that it is easy for adults and minors to find one another. 450 million profiles are rated every day.
9. BLENDR : A flirting app used to meet new people through GPS location services. You can send messages, photos, videos, and rate the hotness of other users. A major issue is that there is no authentication requirements and sexting.
10. KIK MESSENGER : An instant messaging app with over 100 million users that allows exchange of videos, pictures and sketches. This app is being used for sexting and sending of nude selfies. The term “Sext Buddy” is being replaced with “Kik Buddy”. There are no parental controls and no way of authenticating users.
11. WHISPER : This is an anonymous confession app. Users can superimpose text over a picture in order to share their thoughts and feelings. Even though you are posting anonymously, the area where you are posting from is displayed.
12. YIK YAK : Is an app that allows users to post text-only “Yaks” of up to 200 characters. This is viewed by 500 Yakkers who are the closest to the person who wrote the Yak determined by GPS tracking.
13. POOF : An app that makes other apps “disappear” on their phone. Meaning kids can hide any app they don’t want others to see. Others are Hidden App, App Lock and Hide It Pro.
14. OMEGLE : An app used for video chatting. You do not identify yourself through the service. Participants are only identified as “You” and “Stranger”. This can be connected to your Facebook.
